What is Apple cooking up now?

by Peter Nowak, CBCNews.ca

Another day, another round of Apple speculation. This time, it's somewhat intriguing. The company has announced a "special event" for Sept. 5, starting at 10 a.m. PT at San Francisco's Moscone Center, which is home to the annual Macworld expo. Apple hasn't said what it'll be about, but a graphic promoting the event using the iTunes album cover display scheme has some thinking the announcement will have something to do with the music/video store and/or iPods.

What makes the news particularly interesting is that Apple is holding a media briefing in Markham, just north of Toronto, that same day. Apple is generally a tight-lipped company, and arguably even more so in Canada, so its voluntary courtship of the media that day is rare to say the least. The Markham briefing, at 10 a.m. ET and thus three hours before San Francisco, is ostensibly to show off the new iMacs and iLife, but who knows - it could be a platform for anything, much like the U.S. event.

It would be pretty anti-climactic and thus out of character if Apple used the day to simply announce a new line-up of iPods, unless there's something radically new to say. For Canada, the potential announcements are numerous -- the availability of TV and movies for iTunes, or something in regards to the iPhone. But given the bigger pending announcement in the United States later in the day, you'd figure it would be something of global relevance. Needless to say, we'll have more on Sept. 5. Let the speculation begin.

You know what would be REALLY cool? If Apple did one of these PR things and no one showed up.

The amount of free advertising the media gives to Apple - a company that produces at best a handful of products, is astounding.

You'd think they'd have learned from the iPhone silliness.

It is people like you and me that are giving Apple attention; the media writes on subjects that what we are interested in reading. If you dont want to hear Apple every day, dont read material related to it...like you/I just did.

Jeff, if there's one thing I've learned, it's that people never stop trying. XD

Could be iPods, as apple is currently giving away iPods to any student who buys a laptop. Trying to get rid of the old stock?

Apple may only make a 'handful of products', but their products seem to catch the eyes of millions of people worldwide. Not to mention, their products are good, work well and look slick.

Who cares if they get free advertising from the media, that's how advertising and marketing works. You let out a press statement to see who bites. If the media bites, then great, that's the idea.

The new announcment could be about so many things. I'm just going to sit back and see what happens tomorrow.

I have to agree with Jeff Lewis, I am getting pretty sick of the endless Apple hype that the media gives the company. Like many people I own an iPod because that is what people always recommended when I first went shopping, but after owning it for a while, I realized it was a big mistake and I spent way more for what turned out to be a pretty low quality gadget than I needed. There are much better MP3 players out there for consumers if they just take the time to do some research, but none of the other companies get mainstream press coverage like Apple so no-one knows about them.
