Tomorrow is election day in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country with a population of some 70 million people in an area roughly the size of Western Europe. The vote in the DRC (formerly known as Zaire, and not to be confused with the Republic of Congo next door) marks only the second democratic election since 2002, following a disastrous civil war.

Holding a vote in any vast developing country can be logistically challenging even at the best of times, and the DRC's overwhelming geographic divisions (starting with the massive Congo River that divides the place in two), dense and mountainous forests, often incessant rains and virtual lack of roads have raised questions about how well the election will progress. The logistical challenges may also pale in comparison to the social ones: Ethnic and linguistic divisions, extreme poverty, corruption and violence have all been cited as potential democratic roadblocks.

Incumbent president Joseph Kabila and his chief rival Etienne Tshisekedi both claim advantage going into the polls, and there is potential for other challengers to complicate matters.
