Next Thursday, January 12, CBC TV will air the first episode of 8th Fire, a series that looks at the aboriginal experience in today's Canada, and asks where the country's relationship with its indigenous people is headed.

The title comes from a set of Anishinaabe spiritual teachings that predate the European arrival in North America; the "eighth fire" refers to a prophesied future of harmony and justice between different peoples if they choose a path of respect and wisdom.

Hosted by rapper, musician and CBC Winnipeg television personality Wab Kinew, the series travels from the inner city to the remote Arctic, talking to the people who are already busy shaping the future for First Nations in Canada.

Watch the preview trailer below:

Wab Kinew represents a new generation of aboriginal musicians, part of the ever-growing native hip-hop community in Canada. Watch for his appearance in the red chair on our show later this month, and check out his video for "Mama Said":

Also, tune in to CBC Radio One for the Trailbreakers series, focusing on young aboriginals looking to redefine the relationship between Canada and its first inhabitants.

8th Fire arrives at a time when First Nations issues are in the news, from the housing crisis in Attawapiskat to last month's controversial Parliamentary report on ending violence against aboriginal women and girls. Tune in to the series to see aspects of native life in Canada that don't make the headlines.
