Kaetlyn Osmond sidelined 6 weeks with broken leg

Kaetlyn Osmond will miss the the fall figure-skating season following surgery to repair a broken right leg.

Osmond, 18, underwent the procedure at Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton this past Friday.

"I really appreciate all the support I've received from our medical team at Skate Canada and at Misericordia," Osmond said in a statement released Monday.

Osmond, a two-time Canadian champion and Olympic (team) silver medallist, suffered the injury during a Sept. 11 practice session.

Osmond was working on choreography when swerved to avoid another skater, caught an edge and fell, fracturing the fibula in her leg.

Unable to put any weight on the leg for six weeks, she is forced to withdraw from the Autumn Classic International in Barrie, Ont., Skate Canada International in Kelowna, B.C., and the Trophee Eric Bompard in Bordeaux, France.

"I'm obviously disappointed to miss the early part of the skating season," said Osmond, who was born in Marystown, N.L., and resides in Edmonton.

"But I will look forward to getting back onto the ice and training again. I certainly hope to be competing in Kingston at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in January."

Osmond finished 13th overall in the ladies competition at the Sochi Olympics, and helped Canada win silver in the team event.
