Marcus Stroman, Blue Jays pitcher, lost for season

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marcus Stromanwill likely miss the entire 2015 season after suffering a serious knee injury on Tuesday.

Stroman tore the anteriorcruciateligament in his left knee while participating in a bunt drill Tuesday at the Jays' spring-training camp in Dunedin, Fla.

A date for surgery has not been set, and Stromanwill seek a second opinion from renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, but the Blue Jays tweeted thathe's done for the year.

Stroman, 23, was coming off a promising rookie season.The right-handerwent 11-6 with a 3.65 earned-run average and struck out 111 batters while walking just 28 in 130-plus innings. He was promoted from the bullpen to the rotation on May 31 and made 20 starts.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos saidStroman was "crushed" to learn he's out for the year, and the pitcher tweeted he was "beyond devastated."

"We all know the energy he brings and how badly he wants to win and be a part of this team," Anthopoulos said. "It's just one of those things. He's probably the best athlete on the team and is in as good of shape as anybody you're going to have. He's the last guy you would expect for that to happen.

"Again, it's just a freak thing. But we move forward."

Void in rotation

It's the second time a freak knee injury has struck the Jays thisspring training. Canadian outfielder Michael Saunders stepped on a sprinkler head indentation while shagging fly balls and torethe meniscus in his left knee. He had surgery and hopes to ready for Opening Day, or at least soon after.

The loss of Stroman leaves a void in the Jays' rotation, which had looked to be R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle, Stroman, Drew Hutchison and a pitcher still to be determined.

Youngster Aaron Sanchez may get a chance to become a starter, andDaniel Norris and Marco Estrada are options as well.Former Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana is a longshotas he attemptsa comeback.

"No doubt to lose a guy like Stroman is a significant loss for us," Anthopoulos said. "But you move forward and it's going to be an opportunity for some of the other guys that are here."
