Roberto Osuna named Blue Jays' closer

Roberto Osunawill open the season as the Blue Jays' closer, manager John Gibbons announced Wednesday.

Osuna, 21, took over the job last season as a rookie and recorded 20 saves in 23 chances. He also converted his only save opportunity in the post-season.

In 69 2/3 innings of work last season, all as a reliever, Osuna struck out 75 while walking only 16 and surrendering 48 hits.

Osunagot the nod to remain the closer over veteranDrew Storen, who was acquired in anoff-season trade that sent outfielder Ben Revere to Washington.

Gibbons also saidEzequiel Carrerahasmade the team as a reserveoutfielder over Junior Lake and DarrellCeciliani, whowas sent to triple-A Buffalo despite tying for the Jays' lead in spring home runs with four. Right-handers Ryan Tepera, Joe Biagini and Arnold Leon will pitch out of the bullpen.

Starting pitcher Marco Estradaand reliever Aaron Loupwill begin the season on the disabled list. Estrada, who was bothered by a sore back in camp, is slated to make his first start on April 10 against Boston.

The Blue Jays open their season on Sunday at Tampa Bay.
