This Week: Catching a Gravitational Wave

On Thursday, scientists at LIGO are expected to announce that they have detected gravitational waves - ripples in the space-time continuum - for the very first time.

This week, scientists at one of the world's largest science experiments released literally universe-shaking results. Researchers at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced that they have detected gravitationalwaves - ripples in the space-time continuum - for the very first time. The waves are likely from some enormous cosmological event, like the collision of two black holes. If this observation is confirmed, it will be the first critical step in understanding the cosmos' most mysterious force, and could start a whole new field of astronomy - viewing the universe in gravity.
