Make Your Own Medals To Celebrate The Olympic Games

BY CBC KIDS STAFF

Feb 28, 2018

Get the kids in the Olympic Games spirit with this simple and rewarding craft: personalized medals.

What you'll need

  • round lids (yogurt, jam, margarine, etc.) or paper circle for younger children
  • paint brush
  • acrylic paint in gold, silver and bronze (or yellow, grey and orange)
  • glitter glue or nail polish
  • scissors
  • ribbon
  • beads or stickers for decoration
  • duct tape
  • hair dryer (to speed up drying process — optional)

Supplies needed to make the Olympic medal craft.

How It's Made

1. Lay out your lid with the flattest surface facing up and paint to your liking. Depending on the paint, this may take a couple layers. If you want to speed up the drying process, use a hairdryer. A solid paint base will show off your glitter design the best but use your imagination!

Painting lids2. Once the paint dries, it's time to decorate. This is a great opportunity to practice letters, numbers or shapes and even colours.

Decals and beads to be glued on the gold medal.3. Measure the ribbon length before cutting. You'll want to make sure it is long enough for the medal to be pulled over the head easily and that the medal rests on the centre of the chest. Flip the lid over to the unfinished side and secure both ribbon ends with tape.

Ribbon taped on to back of medal.4. Now it's time to show off those special medals — stand tall and wear them with pride.
