Welcome Spring With This Colourful Egg Carton Flowers Craft

April showers bring May flowers, and after the winter we’ve had, we can’t wait to see our gardens dotted with colour again.

We made this easy and adorable flower craft, using egg cartons and popsicle sticks. It felt so good to be making colourful flowers again after months of making snowflakes and winter crafts.

Do you remember our paper plate garden craft? The kids really enjoyed that craft, so we decided to make another garden craft, using different materials. This time, instead of using paper plates for our canvases, we’re using styrofoam produce trays. And instead of using artificial flowers, we’re making our own flowers out of cardboard egg cartons.

What you’ll need:

• egg carton
• styrofoam produce tray
• acrylic paints
• craft sticks
• buttons
• paint brushes
• glue

Note: If your trays had meat packaged on them, be sure to run them through the dishwasher to sterilize them before crafting with them.

First, we painted our styrofoam trays. We used blue to make a sky that covered most of the tray, and we added a strip of brown "garden" to the bottom of the tray.

Next, we snipped our egg cartons into sections. Then the kids chose the colours they wanted for their flowers, and they painted each section of egg carton inside and out.

Older kids can be really creative here. They can blend colours and shade and highlight to add depth and dimension to their flower petals. They could even dust their flowers with glitter to make them sparkle.

When the paint was dry, they made cuts into the edges of the cardboard to shape their flowers.

Then they glued a coloured button into the bottom of each flower.

To finish, they gave their craft sticks a coat of green paint, and they glued everything into place on their styrofoam trays.

I love a craft that's suitable for a wide age range of kids. Start to finish, this one is easy enough for toddlers and preschoolers to make, but older kids will enjoy it too.
