Gift Idea: Paint A Shirt For Father’s Day

BY SELENA MILLS, THEY ROAR

Jun 2, 2017

What’s most pleasing about this thrifty DIY project for the fabulous father of your children is how overjoyed your kids will be in making their dad a special surprise — something they know he will love and wear with pride.

The real challenge lies in getting them to keep quiet about it!

What You'll Need

  • T-shirt (we chose Gildan 100 per cent cotton ones)
  • plastic letter/number stencils
  • fabric paints (we chose three colours — avoid puffy paints as they might look fun, but they wear down after many washes)
  • paintbrushes
  • paint tray
  • water
  • paper towels
  • paint sheet or paper (to cover table)

How It's Made

First, wash the T-shirt. Next, have your kids decide what they want to paint, and lay the shirt out on the table on top of the paint sheet (or paper).

Get your paint ready on the tray (a little goes a long way!), then help your little one with their paintbrush, paying attention to detail. Assist in holding the templates in place as well as wiping the stencil and patting dry after each use — many letters and numbers will be on the same sheet so mistakes might happen, and that’s OK!

Child paints the letter D for dad.

When you're done painting, hang to dry for at least 24 hours. Once dry, lay a towel over top and iron — this sets the fabric paint. Wait a few days before you wash the shirt again, and make sure to do so inside out.

Kids add handprints for final touch on Father's Day t-shirt.

Happy Father’s Day!
