Easy Busytown Mysteries Car Craft

By Megan McChesney

Jun 22, 2014

Huckle and his pals are always scooting around Busytown in the coolest cars. Using air-dry clay, acrylic paint and some fruit-and-veg pouch lids, you can make a whole slew of vehicles. We created the carrot and pickle car to show you how.

What you'll need:

  • air-dry clay
  • acrylic paint
  • paintbrush
  • a piece of green crafting foam
  • fruit-and-veggie pouch lids (you need 4 per vehicle)
  • glue gun (or glue of your choice)
  • Huckle and Pig Will printouts and toothpicks (optional)

How to make your Busytown cars:

1. Sculpt the basic shapes of a carrot and pickle out of the air-dry clay.

2. Use a craft knife to cut out openings for the characters. Cut a slit into the back of the carrot to insert the leafy stem.

3. Allow the shapes to dry completely, as per your clay package instructions.

4. Once dry, paint the cars with acrylic paint. You may need to apply two coats of paint. Allow to dry in between coats.

5. Paint on details including pickle seeds and headlights. Allow to dry.

6. For the carrot, cut a leafy stem out of green craft foam. Glue it into the pre-cut slot.

7. Glue four pouch lids onto each car for wheels.

8. If desired, print and cut out Huckle and Pig Will. Tape a toothpick to the back of each and insert into the cars. You can also use other toys to play with these cars (Lego minifigs fit well!).

Now let your kids explore and solve mysteries all around Busytown in their fancy new veg cars.
