WARMEST SEPTEMBER EVER AT YYT

Sunrise-Reardon.PNG
Shannon Reardon snapped this beautiful picture of the Sunrise over the North Atlantic on September 28th.

Hey Folks,

As I mentioned last week on the blog, this September was going to be very close to a record breaker...

In the end, this was indeed the warmest September ever recorded by the Weather Station at St. John's Airport. That station has been operating since 1942. The warmest September's at YYT (based on the Average Daytime High) are as follows...

If you add in the overnight lows and go based on overall "mean" temperatures... this September still takes the cake.

Warmest Average Mean Temp at YYT
2012: 14.8
2003: 14.6
1943: 14.4
1999: 14.2
1942: 13.7
2005: 13.7

Last week, I also looked back at the Old St. John's Weather Station. That site was in downtown St. John's and was used from 1874-1942. Now it's hard to directly compare temperatures between the old downtown site and the new airport site, because as you know, the temperature between the airport and downtown can vary depending on the day. Still, it's fun to see where we rank. Here are the warmest September's at YYT & the old downtown site, again based on the average daytime highs.

Old Airport Site + YYT
1937: 15.3
1938: 15.0
2012: 14.8
2003: 14.6
1943: 14.4
1889: 14.2

Again, September was nice enough to bring St. John's 16 days at 20+, which brings the total to 79 days this year. In case you missed it, back on September 22nd, St. John's officially broke the old 1999 record of 75 days at 20 or warmer! What a year it's been.

St. John's was the rainfall amounts were only 73 mm, which is far below the average of 131 mm.

ACROSS THE PROVINCE

GANDER finished September with an average high of 19.9 and a mean temperature of 15.0. As per Rodney Barney that ties with September 2003 for the warmest mean & ranks a very very close 2nd behind 2003 for the warmest average high, which was 20.0 Rainfall was 121.2 mm, which is more than the annual average of 102 mm.

DEER LAKE weather station did record a few errors, however it appears you finished the month with an average high near 19.7 and mean temperature near 13.5. Your "normals" are highs of 16.6 and a mean of 10.9, so September was well above average. Rainfall for the month was also well above average at 134 mm! Normal for the month is closer to 96 mm.

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY weather station is missing a few days of data. However, you folks finished September with an average high near 18 and mean near 12.7. Those temperatures are WELL above your average high of 13.9 and mean of 9.2. When the final data is entered, I'll update this post, however looks like your warmest September since 2003. Rainfall totals were near 52 mm, short of your normals of 92 mm.

LABRADOR CITY is also missing data on the climate site. As of now, your average high is near 15.0 for the month and 10.2 with 114 mm of Rain and yes, that trace of wet snow reported on Friday morning. Again, I'll update this post when the information is updated.
