Shattered communication systems in Haiti made it impossible toimmediately determine the number of casualties from this week'sdevastating earthquake, but an International Red Cross officialestimated Wednesday that three million people may have been affected.

ForeignAffairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said there has been no word on whetherany Canadians died in the earthquake, although roughly 6,000 Canadiancitizens live in the Caribbean country. Of the 6,000, only 700 areregistered with the Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Cannon said.
