Holocaust hero honoured

A former British spy who saved more Jews from the Holocaust than Oskar Schindler has been all but unknown to the world -- until now.

Frank Foley, who helped an estimated 10,000 Jews escape from Nazi Germany during the 1930s, has been named "Righteous Among Nations" by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum in Jerusalem. It's the highest award a non Jew can get.

Foley worked at the British embassy in Berlin in the 1930s. It was a time when Jewish families were being rounded up and sent off to the newly established concentration camps. Most never returned.

One way out of Germany was to emigrate but strict control meant exit permits were hard to come by. As a passport control officer Foley ignored official policy and helped thousands of Jews to escape.

Foley also hid fugitive Jews in his home, helped people find fake passports, and even rescued people from concentration camps.

In doing so, Foley broke British visa laws. He also put his life in danger, as he did not have diplomatic immunity.

Foley never talked about what he did. But in a new book Foley, The Spy Who Saved 10,000 Jews, the people he helped pay tribute to him.

Foley died in 1958 but his memory lives on.
