The superstar singer-songwriter Princehas died at the age of 57.While tributes pile up outside his Minnesota home and online, here's a look at his life, in pictures.

Prince Rogers Nelson was born onJune 7, 1958.

The Minneapolis native was perhaps best known for his hits Purple Rain, Kiss, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret and If I Was Your Girlfriend, among many others.

Prince had a Canadian connection.

Prince's second wife,Manuela Testolini, is from Toronto and the couple once called the city home.During that periodPrincerecorded part of the album Musicology inMississauga(theback of itsCDjacket features the artist posing in front of the Toronto skyline)and the couple were sometimes spotted at Raptors games, like this one in 2002.

In 2007, he put on one of the greatest Super Bowlhalftime shows.

Prince performed in Florida during Super Bowl XLI (between the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears), anddespite a downpourput on what fans and the NFLregard as one of the best halftimeperformances ever.

In 2004 he rocked with Beyonc and entered the Hall of Fame.

Prince's hit When Doves Cry spent five weeks at No. 1on the Billboard chart in1984. Heintroduced himself toa new generation of fans with his2004 Grammy Awards performance withBeyonc.He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that year.

The Artist Formerly Known as won the rights to his music.

Princewas fiercely protective of his music and became embroiled in a dispute with the Warner Bros. record label over the rights to his records from 1978 to the mid-1990s, including Purple Rain and 1999. The dispute was settled in 2014 with Prince winning the rights to his music, butduring that period, Prince famously dropped his name in place of a symbol in protest.

He's also won an Oscar.

Along with seven Grammy wins over his career, Princewon an Oscar for the film score forPurple Rain, a Golden Globe for the title song to 2006'sHappy Feetand a raft of other music industry honours.

He had been set to publish a memoir entitledThe Beautiful Onesin fall 2017.
