Mannarich fish balls recalled

Some ready-to-eat processed fish products may be contaminated with dangerous bacteria, federal officials say.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Mannarich Foods of Markham, Ont. are warning people not to eat some vacuum-packed, refrigerated, preparedfish products because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.

The bacteria produce toxins that may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

The products were distributed nationally under the Mannarich Food and Ocean Chinese Food Products labels.

Affected foodshave best before codes up to and including December 16.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with eating these products, CFIA said.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. However, eating food contaminated with the toxin may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis.

The manufacturer is voluntarily recallingthe affected fish balls and rolls. The agency said it is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
