The ex-Beatle made the revelation in an interview published Friday inRadio Times magazine in Britain.

"It's not a bad idea to have someone to talk to. It's normally over family matters," said McCartney.

The 64-year-old songwriter said he first sought comfort in writing music but needed professional counselling.

"You can be in an argument, or feeling down, and if you're lucky enough to be able to write, you go into a corner and work your way through the emotions," McCartney said.

The saga of the split has obsessed the British tabloids. Newspapers have published reports alluding to Mills McCartney's lurid background when she was a model.

The tabloids have also alleged the divorce papers contain claimsthat the ex-Beatle abusedthe38-year-old animal rights campaigner once stabbing her in the arm with a broken wine glass and used illegal drugs.McCartney issued a statement that he plans to defend himself against those charges.

Mills McCartney has struck back and announced plans to sue at least two papers over the "false, damaging" claims about the divorce.

The couple married in 2002 and have a three-year-old daughter, Beatrice.

'Very scary' death threats

The singer has hired the law firm that represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Diana, Princess of Wales, while Mills McCartney has retained the lawyer who represented Diana.

Mills McCartney has recently admitted she has received death threats since the announcement of the breakup.

In a BBC interview on Friday, she said she was facing "very scary" dangers and was relying on protection from her personal trainer, Ben Amigoni, because she could not afford afull-time security detail.

Mills McCartney has denied Amigoni is her boyfriend.

"I've felt severely upset and severely depressed through these six months, but when I lost my leg, I didn't."

The former model had her left leg amputated below the knee in 1993 after a police motorcycle hit her.She has since campaigned on behalf of amputees and launched an anti-landmines crusade.
