TSO to perform in Sudbury, Sault

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will tour to Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie next week to perform for the public and for local students.

It's a rare opportunity for residents of the two northern cities to hear theTSO playing liveconducted by Peter Oundjian.

The symphony will perform music by Beethoven and Mendelssohn and a world premiere of music written by TSO composer-adviser Gary Kulesha.

The concerts feature solo performances from TSO principal trombone Gordon Wolfe and TSO trumpet James Gardiner.

The public concerts are:

• Sept. 15 in Sudbury with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.
• Sept. 17 in Sault Ste. Marie in partnership with the Algoma Conservatory, the Algoma Fall Festival and the Sault Ste. Marie Symphony Orchestra.

The residency tour, scheduled for Sept. 14-18,also includes a significant public education component, with orchestra members visiting local schools and performing small ensemble concerts designed for young listeners.

A children's DVD and educational package called How the Gimquat Found Her Song, will be made available to teachers during the tour. Iteducates childrenabout classical music with a story about a bird who is silent until amagician helps her find a perfect song.

It is the fifth year the TSO has participated in a five-day residency tour in northern Ontario.

"It is just a shame in the world of music you have an orchestra like the TSO and the only way to hear it would be to come to Toronto. The idea is to be able to come to other communities to bring them what we do and our passions for music," Oundjian said.
