A Boston man has triumphed in an online competition to become a male model on The Price is Right.

The long-running show, now hosted by comedy star Drew Carey, announced on Friday's episode that Rob Wilson of Boston had landed the role, which lasts for one week beginning Oct. 15.

The Price is Right, which celebrated four consecutive decades on the air in September, announced a contest searching for its first male model over the summer. Hundreds of hopefuls flooded the initial Los Angeles casting call held in late August. A five-part series about the model search streamed on the classic game show's website.

The field of competitors was eventually narrowed to 26 contestants who were required to compete in challenges, including penning and singing lyrics for The Price is Right theme song. Viewers then voted for their favourite.

Both the original version of The Price is Right (which aired from 1956 to 1965) and the relaunched version (broadcast by CBS since 1972) have employed female models to showcase and demonstrate items and prizes available to be won on the game show.

Men have served as models in certain instances, including the show's announcers and visitors from other CBS shows making "crossover" appearances.
