U.S. author Jonathan Franzen is getting a second chance to sit opposite Oprah Winfrey on her daytime talk show.

Winfrey announced Friday she had picked Franzen's novel Freedom as her latest book club pick.

Franzen becomes one of the few authors to have two books picked for Oprah's influential book club his The Corrections was a pick nine years ago.

But in 2001 Franzen disparaged Winfrey's literary tasteand suggested that appearing on her show might turn off lovers of literature. She cancelled his appearance.

Now it appears Winfrey is ready to give him another chance.

Winfrey called Freedom a "masterpiece" on her show on Friday and she is recommending it to readers as "an epic family saga that has it all sex, love even rock 'n' roll!"

Freedom is already in its second printing after winning acclaim from the New York Times and many critics. The Oprah Book Club sticker on its cover is expected to boost sales further.
