Steven Spielberg wins best director at 2023 Golden Globes

The Golden Globes made their post-scandal comeback on Tuesday, after spending a year off the air, with StephenSpielberg winning best director, and his filmThe Fablemansearning the award for best motion picture, drama.

Live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Hollywood's booziest award show was packed with actorscelebratingthe best of television and film.

The night kicked off with host Jerrod Carmichael knocking on the show's past scandals andlack of diversity at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Hollywood's Golden Globe Awards are trying to come back from a major scandal over a lack of diversity, bringing in 21 new voting members, six of whom are Black. But critics say those changes dont seem to be reflected in this years nominations.

In 2021, aLos Angeles Times investigation revealed the HFPA'shad no Black members, and faced other allegations including voters being influenced by studios. Starsboycotted the show and actor Tom Cruisereturned his threeawards.

NBC pulled the awards off the air and last year winners were announced on Twitter.

Tuesday's top winners includedEverything Everywhere All at Once,The Banshees of InisherinandAbbott Elementary.

Ke Huy Quan ofEverything Everywhere All at Oncepicked up the first award of the evening for actor in a supporting role in any motion picture.

"For so many yearsI was afraid Ihad nothing more to offer... Iwould never surpass what I achieved as a kid," Quansaid, referring to his role as a child actor inIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

"Thankfully more than 30 years later two guys thought of me, they remembered that kid and they gave me an opportunity to try again," he said in his acceptance speech, thanking the film's two directors.
