The Bear, Succession tie for most wins at 75th Emmy Awards

The 2023 Emmy Awards which were pushed to 2024 due to the Hollywood strikes celebrated achievements in television, with big wins for The Bear and Succession, which each took home six awards.

After a four month delay, the 2023 Emmy Awards celebrated the best in television Monday night.

The show, which wasoriginally slated to air in September 2023 and waspushed into the new year due tothe Hollywood strikes, took place atthe Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Singer Elton John achievedEGOT status when an individual collectsan Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony after winning an Emmy for outstanding variety special (live)for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium. The musician has five Grammys, one Tony and two Oscars.

John'shusband,Toronto producer David Furnish, alsowon an Emmy for his role on the variety special.

The Bear and Successiontiedfor most wins, taking home sixawardseach.

The Bear won outstanding comedy series, with Canadian chef, producer and actor Matty Matheson accepting the awardon behalf of the cast and crew. Meanwhile starJeremy Allen White took homeoutstanding lead actor in a comedy series, andAyo Edebiriand Ebon Moss-Bachrachwonoutstanding supporting actress and actor in a comedy series.

Successionhad 27 nomination and picked up several awards in the drama series category,including Sarah Snook for lead actress, Kieran Culkin for lead actor and Matthew Macfadyenforsupporting actor. It also took home the last award of the night for outstanding drama series.

Beef took home fiveawards in thelimited oranthology series or movie category including outstanding lead actress for Ali Wongand outstanding lead actor for Steven Yeun.

The live broadcast was hosted by actor Anthony Anderson. It followedtheCreative Arts Emmysearlier this month wheremany series, including The Last of Us, The White Lotus, The Bear and Beef,picked up several awards.

Canadian nominations

Hamilton'sMartin Short was upfor outstanding lead actor in a comedyfor Only Murders in the Building, but lost to White from The Bear. Canadian producer Susan Coynewasup for an award for outstandinglimited or anthology series for her work inDaisy Jones & the Six,but lost to Beef.

Several other Canadians were nominated for Creative Emmys leading up to the Monday broadcast but lost in their respective categories, includingScarborough, Ont., born actor Lamar Johnson foroutstanding guest actor in a drama for his performance in The Last of Us.Actors Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Oliver Platt (The Bear) wereboth up foroutstanding guest actor in a comedy, but lost toSam Richardson of Ted Lasso.

The Last of Us also hadseveral additionalCanadian nominations at the Creative Emmysincluding Chris Glimsdale and Penny Thompson for outstanding contemporary hairstyling, Rebecca Toon and Michelle Carr for outstanding contemporary costumes, and Paul Healy for outstanding production design. Though thenominees didn't win,Canadian audio engineer Michael Playfair did take homean awardfor outstanding sound mixing.

Chilean-Canadian composerCristobal Tapia de Veer also won a Creative Emmyfor outstanding music composition for aseries forThe White Lotus.
