Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan jailed in poaching case

Bollywood star Salman Khan is in jail after surrendering to Indian police a day after a court upheld a five-year conviction for killing an endangered gazelle.

Bollywood star Salman Khan, known for his macho roles and bad boy reputation, is in jail after surrendering to Indian police a day after a court upheld a five-year conviction for killing an endangered gazelle.

"He has been arrested at the airport lounge and the arrest warrant was presented to him there itself," confirmed a police official in the city of Jodhpur in the northern state of Rajasthan.

Khan flew from Mumbai to Jodhpur on Saturday to give himself up. Khan had said he wanted to act "as a responsible citizen and somebody who abides by the law and respects the judiciary."

The muscular actor was accompanied by his family, including his famous screenwriting father, Salim Khan, and actor-brother Sohail Khan.

On Friday, a Rajasthan court rejected the 41-year-old actor's appeal against a 2006 conviction for killing a chinkara a type of gazelle protected by conservation laws while in a wildlife reserve back in 1998.

The actor is reported to have killed the animal and sent it to chefs at his hotel to be cooked.

Khan has other court cases looming.

He was convicted in a second poaching case in 2006, for killing protected blackbuck antelopes during yet another hunting trip in Rajasthan. He was given a one-year sentence but released on bail upon appeal.

Khan is also charged in the death of a man who was killed while sleeping on a pavement in Mumbai in 2002. Khan is suspected of drunk driving but the actor has denied being at the wheel.

The actor's most recent movies are Marigold and Partner.
