His place as a folk music icon is secure, but Bob Dylan has put another form of his artistic endeavour on display to the public: his paintings.

The Halcyon Gallery, located in London's posh Mayfair district, is set to open a new exhibition highlighting the singer-songwriter's acrylic-on-canvas paintings.

Based on sketches he made on the road between 1989 and 1992, the selections chosen for the show Bob Dylan on Canvas feature vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes.

Works include a series depicting train tracks and the paintings Sunflowers and Woman in Red Lion Pub.

"I just draw what's interesting to me, and then I paint it," Dylan said in a statement.

"I'm not trying to make social comment or fulfil somebody's vision and I can find subject matter anywhere. I guess in some way that comes out of the folk world that I came up in."

Dylan has "definitely got a style of his own," gallery president Paul Green told media during a preview on Wednesday.

The exhibition opens Saturday and continues to April 10.
