Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd cap Back to the Future Day on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, the two stars of the beloved Back to the Future movies, capped a day of worldwide celebrations marking Back to the Future Day with an appearance on late-night's Jimmel Kimmel Live that delighted fans of the beloved franchise.

Wednesday was the date Oct. 21, 2015 that Fox and Lloyd's characters Marty McFly and Emmett "Doc" Brown famously journeyed to in the sci-fi film trilogy's second installment in 1989.

The pair rolled onstage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House, where the show is taping this week, on Wednesday.

They appearedin character in a replica DeLorean time machine from the films and earned a lengthy standing ovation from the live audience in the packed theatre.

The pair queried host Kimmel about 2015, with the late-night host jokingly offering up that the passing of Johnny Carson, the invention of cronuts, the proliferation of smartphones and the ubiquity of selfies were among the notable milestones of the past 30 years.

"Doc, it seems like 2015 kinda sucks," quipped Fox, as McFly.

"I believe we may have inadvertantly travelled into an alternate 2015 where human evolution has been stopped by superfluous technology," Lloyd added later in the bit.

Canadian-born actor Fox, who stayed for an interview with Kimmel, also indulged Back to the Future fans by unveiling Nike's latest shoe: the Nike Air Mag, a self-lacing sneaker based on the pair shown in Back to the Future II.

Nike sent Fox the first pair of the limited-edition shoes, with proceeds of future sales to go towards the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support research into Parkinsons' Disease.

The film's widespreadfanbase marked the day with movie screenings, special events and jokey social media posts issued by everyone from Scottish police departments to transportation ministries in Canada and Austria.
