Canada warns of Bangkok travel risks

Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs is advising against non-essential travel in parts of Bangkok because the Thai capital's central commercial district has been rocked by protests and violence.

Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs is advising againstnon-essential travel in parts of Bangkok becausethe Thai capital'scentral commercial district has been rocked by protests, mass rallies and violence.

"In addition to the risk of violent clashes, attacks and unrest, travellers are encountering increased security, as well as significant delays, disruptions and inconvenience," states the advisory.

The Canadian Embassy is in the area considered dangerous.

The Foreign Affairs Department goes on to warn, "The situation is very volatile and uncertain and it is unclear for how many days these protests may continue and which other areas may be affected."

Canadians are urged to avoid demonstrations, protest sites, security personnel and prominent government buildings.

On Thursday, a series of explosions in the district killedthree peopleand injured more than 80.

The federal government says it will helpCanadiansleave a country or region only as a last resort, and on a cost-recovery basis.

"The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveler," according to the advisory, "Travellers are responsible for their own personal safety,"

A state of emergency remains in effect in Thailand.
