Windsor's unemployment rate jumped to 9.7 per cent in September, up nearly one percentage point from the month before.

The unemployment rate in August was nine per cent.

Windsor has the highest unemployment rate in Canada, followed by Montreal at 8.7 per cent.

Nationally, Canada's economy added 12,000 jobs last month, but the unemployment rate increased slightly to 7.1 per cent because more people were also looking for work.

Taras Natyshak, the MPP for Essex, pointed a finger at the provincial government on the employment issue, saying the governing Liberals are not doing enough to protect or generate new jobs in Ontario.

"There are too many people across this province who can't afford to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with their families this weekend because they're out of work,"said Natyshak in a release, who is the provincial NDP economic development critic.

"This month'sjobs numbers show that the Liberal government is letting Ontarians down when it comes to protecting and creating good paying jobs, especially in communities that depend on the manufacturing sector for their survival."
