New police hires better represent Windsor's diverse community

Windsor police are taking steps to increase its diversity by hiring nine new officers from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Chief Al Frederick recognizes the need of his team to better reflect the city's diverse population, saying this latest move is just another step in that direction.

"We don't have hundreds of diverse officers, but we're getting there," he said. "We're doing the right thing, but it takes some time."

The new hires all have policing experience and are eager to work in the city. Several new hires speak more than one language, which is important for front-line officers.

"If we reflect the communities that we police and serve, we can be more effective and I certainly believe that," Ferederick said. "The more culturally diverse we are, the more reflective of the community we are, the more effective we will be. There's no question in my mind."
