Transportation Safety Board investigating engine room fire on Canadian vessel docked in Windsor

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team to investigate an engine room fire that began on a Canadian bulk carrier on the Detroit River.

The TSBsaid it will "gather information and assess the occurrence."

According to a Monday media release, the U.S. Coast Guard responded on Sunday to an engine room fire that began on the Canadian cargo vessel Tecumseh.

It happened at approximately 2 p.m.,while the 195-metreboatwas near Zug Island on the Americanside of the Detroit River.

The Coast Guard diverted itsBristol Bay vessel to the scene. A separate boat and a helicopter were used to assess the situation.

The Tecumseh eventually drifted into Canadian waters, where afirefighting team boarded and extinguished the blaze overnight Sunday, after all of the Tecumseh's 16 crew members disembarked and were evaluated by local EMS.

A TSBspokesperson confirmed that the Tecumseh is anchored in Windsor.

The U.S. Coast Guard worked with the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as Transport Canada and the Windsor Harbour Master to coordinate response efforts.

The U.S. Coast Guard will also coordinate any investigation into the cause of the fire.
