Rose hip: a traditional paczki filling that is hard to find

The European Market in Windsor produces paczki year-round, and is one of the only producers in the region to offer the traditional rose hip filling. Many of their wholesale clients are grocers in Metro Detroit.

Kinga Banasik, manager of the European Market in Windsor, talks about their paczki filled with rose hip, a traditional variety that is generally hard to find in Windsor and Detroit.

In the Christian tradition, February 28 is Shrove Tuesday, a day of feasting before the Lenten fast. In much of North America, the day is associated with the consumption of pancakes.

But in Windsor, Detroit and other areas with significant Polish communities, it's PaczkiDay.

In the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday,it's virtually impossible to escape the decadent cousin of the jelly doughnut. Even local Tim Hortonslocations get in on the action.

However, despite the pastry'subiquitous availability, one traditional paczkifilling is still hard to find:rose hip.
