Renters bring flood repair feud to Landlord Tenant Board

Tenants in an east end apartment complex are going to the Landlord Tenant Board to complain about repair work their landlord is refusing to do following last month's flooding.

The tenants live in the Village Court apartments on Tranby Street. They still have musty carpets and mouldy baseboards from the flood that hit the region at the end of September andsay the landlord is refusing to replace the mouldy debris.

Phone Dala is a single mother of one seven year-old son.

"I cannot stay here. I stay during the day but at night time I went to sleep in my neighbour's house," Dala said. Shefears her son will get sick if he stays in his room, showing the mould under her baseboards and damage to her doors.

The landlord has replaced laminate flooring but is only offering to steam clean carpets and won't replace the baseboards.

"I pay my rent on time," Dala said."It looks like I live in a dump. It smells disgusting."

Jessica Haggert speaks for her aunt who has the same problems. She says whenever they complain to the manager he refers them to the property owner, who then refers them back to the building manager.

"It's a back and forth triangle," said Haggert, who also lives in the building.

York Property Managment in London did not respond to CBC requests for an interview.

Melissa Lesperance lives in another basement unit with 9-year-olddaughter.The two are sharing the living room while blowers work to remove moisture in the bedrooms.

Lesperance is livid with the lack of response and is worried about getting sick from mould.

"The carpets are well over 8 years old and they're still refusing to replace them," said Lesperance.

Lesperance and Dala were told the landlord is sending an inspector to look at the apartments Thursday.
