New scanner detects diseases earlier in Windsor

A new mobile diagnostic imaging machine has rolled into Windsor. It's called a PET scanner.

PET stands for Positron Emission Tomography. It can detect diseases much earlier than CAT scans or MRIs because it can detect chemical and physiological changes related to the metabolism, not just lumps and bumps.

Dr. Kevin Tracey is the medical director overseeing the machine.

"It's very exciting. We've been working for many years to bring this technology to Windsor. Right now, it benefits cancer patients the most, but it's going to impact all areas of medicine: heart disease investigation, investigation of Alzheimer's and other brain disorders," he said.

The PET scanner is at the Windsor Professional Centre on Howard Avenue at Memorial Drive.
