Essex NDP MP Tracey Ramsey tells CBC she was very surprised by the results of her party's leadership review.

Members at a party convention in Edmonton over the weekend voted 52 per cent in favour of finding someone to replace Tom Mulcair as leader. Ramsey wanted Mulcair to stay on as leader.

"Going around that room, there was a lot of support for Tom. As we can clearly see in the vote, it was very divided," Ramsey said. "So, there was a large percentage that thought we shouldn't have a leadership review, and, obviously, the percentage that thought we should outweighed it. I thought that Tom was incredibly gracious, and to me, he showed such strength in being able to address everyone after that vote."

Mulcair will remain the party's leader until a successor is chosen within 24 months.

Ramsey says it's too early for her to think about who she would like to see as the next federal NDP leader.

Meanwhile, long-time Windsor West NDP MP Brian Masse took to Facebook to thank Mulcair for his time as leader.

"The membership has spoken, but I do want to thank Tom for all his hard work, taking on tough issues and making a difference for Canadians," Masse wrote. "The #NDP will work to a fair and just "Can"ada, making sure the environment, economy and social justice is the base for all Canadian from coast to coast to coast!"
