Mosquito pools in Ridgetown test positive for West Nile

Two pools of mosquitos captured in a trap near Ridgetown have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit.

Few people with the virus display any symptoms, said Public Health Inspector Michael Hatten, but it can cause flu-like symptoms including aches and fever and nausea, vomiting and even paralysis in some severe cases.

On July 26, the health unit in Windsor confirmed the area's first human case West Nile virus for 2017.

So far this year, six mosquito pools in the Windsor-Essex region have tested positive for the virus.

Residents are warned to get rid of any standing water where the bugs could breed and to protect themselves using the following steps:

• Use insect repellent that contain DEET
• Ensure doors and window screens are free of holes and gaps
• Limit time spent outdoors at dawn and dusk
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants in light colours when outdoors
