One man sent to hospital, fire now out at downtown Windsor apartment building

A fire broke out in one of the upper units of Le Goyeau Condominiums on Tuesday.

All but two residents were able to go back to their homes

A fire that started Tuesday afternoon on a balcony of anupper level unit of Le Goyeau Condominiums is now out.

A Windsor fire spokesperson said one man is in hospital being treated for smoke inhalation.

Crews closed down sections of Riverside Drive Eastand Goyeau Street as they rushed to fight the fire on the 12th floor of the building.

Flames and smokecould be seen coming from the balcony of the unit.

Adrian Derikoziswas listening to music through his headphones when he heard an alarm go off in his building.

"I grabbed some valuables in my backpack because I smelled smoke right after that," he said.

He said he felt safe leaving the building and didn't smell smoke in the hallways.

Some residents could be seen on their balconies while crews fought the fire.

"We've been told and also just judging by the building, it's all cement and concrete and steel, but the smart thing to do would be to get out," saidDerikozis.

Fire officials evacuated the floor where the fire started, but asked people fromother floors to remainin their unitsas firefighters ran up and down stairwells to battle the flames.

After the situation was controlled, officials said all residents were able to return to their units, except for 1201.

The fire was caused by an electrical failure and caused $125,000 in damage. Two residents were displaced.

The 15-floor building is on the corner of Riverside Drive East and Goyeau Street.
