Highway 3 would be safer with regional transit, expert says

Do not widen the deadly stretch of Highway 3, one traffic expert says.

Widening the road between Essex and Leamington would not solve the problem of collisions, according to James Armstrong, a spokesperson for Transport Action.

"Widening highways does not solve the problem, it's going to exacerbate the problem," he said.

The seven-car crash on Highway 3 on Friday that killed a Brantford man renewed calls to widen the road by Essex NDP MPP Taras Natyshak.

More space on the road may help at first, but Armstrong said eventually that space will be used by more vehicles.

He prefers to see other transit options, like trains and buses, to reducing the number of car crashes.

Armstrong wants a regional bus service that goes around the county to pick people up and also have an express bus to take people working in Windsor into the city.

The communities would need to work together to determine if the system could work, but Armstrong said he thinks it could happen.
