Flooded Amherstburg residents angry with town

Amherstburg, Ont.,residents want to know why more than 500 homes were flooded last week during a heavy rain, and they're taking their anger out on town officials.

Residents whose basements flooded weren't satisfied with the response they got from council as to why so many homes were affected.

George Pearson has lived on Pacific Avenue for 37 years. Last week was the first time his basement has ever flooded.

"None of us on this side of the street have ever had one drop of water and all of a sudden this happens," said Pearson.

Pearson said he was told that the pipes running from the house were "no good" and that the town was going to do smoke tests to check for leaks.

Mayor Wayne Hurst says the administration will conduct a review and prepare a report on what happened and what, if anything, can be done to prevent similar problems in the future.

"It'll put to ease some of the rumours that some individuals have heard," Hurst said.

The main factor is that a large amount of rain fell in a short period of time, he said.

The mayor said it could be a couple of months before there's anything to report because a consultant has to review the information that administration is gathering.
