Driver charged after fiery tractor-trailer crash damages Hwy 401

A westbound tractor-trailer struck a north-side cement barrier, bounced off it and hit the centre barrier, pushing it into the eastbound lane, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

Police have charged the driver of the tractor-trailer that crashed on Highway 401 causingso much damage to the road that it was shut down overnight Thursday.

The 57-year-old man from Windsorwas heading westbound when he lost control near Bloomfield Road, slammed into two cement barriers, pushing one of them into the eastbound lane, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

His truck then caught fire, but the driver was not injured.

Damages caused traffic lanes in both directions to be shut down for a couple hours. Eastbound lanes eventually opened up, but westbound lanes suffered damages that required emergency repairs.

The highway reopened shortly before 8 a.m. Friday.

The man has been charged with careless driving.
