Danny's Tavern is coming down.

Monday morning, heavy equipment began tearing down the landmark on Riverside Drive at Hall Avenue in Windsor.

The structure is officially known as the John Davis House.

John Davis was the mayor of Windsor from 1897 to 1901.

John Calhoun, heritage planner for the City of Windsor, said the city doesn't know exactly when the house was built.

However, he said Davis lived in the house during his tenure as mayor.

Calhoun also said the structure was heritage register listed. That only means the owner had to get approval from city council to tear it down. Permission was granted because, according to Calhoun, only the southwest corner of the building was in its original form.

The building went through many incarnations.

It was a hotel, a tavern and most recently, a male strip bar for more than 30 years.

Calhoun said the new owners have plans to build a low-intensity commercial building on the site.
