Cpl. A.P Grenon and Canadian Veterans Memorial Rink opens

The only Windsorite killed in action in Afghanistan was honoured Thursday.

The Cpl. A.P Grenon and Canadian Veterans Memorial Rink was officially unveiled Thursday at the WFCU Centre.

Andrew Paul Grenon was a 23-year-old member of the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion. Grenon was born in Windsor and enlisted in the military on April 7, 2004. He was injured twice on his tour duty in Afghanistan and returned for a second tour.

On Sept. 3, 2008, while on security patrol, his armoured vehicle was attacked. Five military personnel were injured. But Grenon and two others were killed.

Grenon was the only Windsorite killed in action in Afghanistan. He received the General Campaign Star International Security Assistance Force and posthumously, the Sacrifice Medal.

It was an emotional day for Theresa Charbonneau and her family. Charbonneau, who is Grenon's mother, was nearly at a loss for words Thursday.

"For the city to name a hockey rink that he spent so many happy hours on, after him, it's just so fitting, we are so grateful," she said. "I don't know what else to say."
