Today the Toronto police have stepped up their campaign against illegally parked cars in the downtown core. The move is aimed at clearing congestion on city streets clogged during rush hour.

Here's what to do if you suspect your car has been towed:

The Toronto police have provided the following information, telling drivers what to do if they suspect their vehicle has been towed:

  1. Call the Toronto Police Service non-emergency line at 416-808-2222, press 4, then press 2, which will put you in contact with the communications dispatcher.
  2. Have the correct vehicle licence plate number and your vehicle's last known location available.
  3. The dispatcher will advise you if your car has been impounded or relocated, as well as the vehicle's current location.

Once you have determined that your vehicle has been impounded, call the appropriate towing company right away to make arrangements to retrieve it. Remember that storage fees continue to accrue, so attend the impound facility as quickly as possible.

The storage day is 24 hours from the time the vehicle arrives at the pound. Twenty-five per cent of the 24-hour storage fee is chargeable for each of the first four hours, which shall include any part of an hour. One hour is payable as soon as the vehicle arrives at the pound.

The hourly rate and minimum rate will reapply at the conclusion of each 24-hour period. Here are how the city's police divisions break down by towing district:

1 District = Divisions 11, 12, 13, 14, and 53 - west of Yonge Street, north of Bloor Street West and south of Lawrence Avenue West.
2 District = Divisions 22, 23.
3 District = Divisions 31, 32, 33, and 53 - east of Yonge Street, north of Bloor Street East and south of Lawrence Avenue East.
