Man charged with attempted murder after 2 cops slashed with butcher knife

Toronto police say two officers were taken to hospital when a man attacked them with a butcher knife after they knocked on a door in the city's north west.

Toronto police say two officers were seriously injured whena man attacked them with a butcher knife after they knocked on a door in the city's northwest end.

Both officers were taken to hospital and have been treated and released. They are recovering at home.

Police said officers used a conductive energy weaponbefore making an arrest.

The accused, 33, did not suffer any injuries. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, weapons dangerous, assault with intent to resist arrest.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Police initially said on Twitterthe officers were responding to a"check address call" in the Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West area shortly after 11 a.m.

Now, theysaythe officers were searching for a missing 56-year-old man named Nathaniel Brettellat the time and that he has still not been found.

Police say they are concerned forBrettell's safety and that he was last seen on Jan. 21 in the nearbyWestona Street and Dixon Road area.

In a news release late Wednesday, police said four officers went to area to check on his well-being when the attack occurred in a common area of the residence.

Despite having limited information, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said they were concerned about the officers' health and wished them a quick recovery during a provincial COVID-19 update.
