Talks with Ontario public elementary teachers resume today

The union representing Ontario elementary school teachers and the province will meet at the bargaining table today for the first timesince talks broke down on Sept. 11.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation (ETFO) of Ontario says bargainingdates have been set for today and Tuesday.

Bargaining broke down last month and ETFO had threatened rotatingone-day strikes as the government urged elementary teachers toaccept deals similar to those that had worked for their colleaguesin high schools and the Catholic system.

ETFO says it will continue its work-to-rule action until a "fairand reasonable agreement" specific to its members can be reached.

As part of its work-to-rule campaign, ETFO has said its memberswould not take part in parent-teacher meetings or class trips andnot fill in for absent colleagues.

ETFO is also still proceeding with an unfair labour practicecomplaint with the Ontario Labour Relations Board over what itclaimed was the refusal of the government and the Ontario PublicSchool Boards' Association to bargain in good faith.
