Man dead, officer seriously hurt in police shooting in Orillia, Ont., SIU investigating

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says it is investigating a police-involved shooting in Orillia that has left a man dead and an officer seriously injured.

Ontario's police watchdog says it is investigating a police-involved shooting in Orillia that has left a man dead.

The man, 26, was shoton Thursday shortly before 2 p.m.

In a news release on Thursday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a call about a disturbance at a home on Barrie Road.

Officers located a man believed to have been involved in the area of Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street S., the SIU said. The man had an "edged" weapon and the officer was stabbed, the SIU added.

"The officer discharged his firearm. At some point, another officer discharged a conducted energy weapon," the SIU said in the release.

The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer who was stabbed was taken to hospital. The OPP says he is now in stable condition.
