Impaired driving charges up this Thanksgiving compared to last year

Ontario Provincial Police say more than 35 impaired driving related charges were laid in the GTA since Friday morning, an increase from last year'sThanksgiving weekend count.

"In the same period last year we laid 29 impaired driving charges," OPP Sgt.KerrySchmidtsaid.

A single driver involved in a deadly crash on Highway 400accounted for several of this weekend's charges.Police allege a25-year-old Bramptonman rear-ended a vehicle, killing one of its occupants and leaving three others injured.

Arti Vyas, 60, of Mississauga,died in hospital from her injuries.

The driver has been charged with impaired driving causing death, three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm and a couple other drug and weapon related offences.

Schmidt saida lot of impaired drivers that policepull overdon't think that their drinking has actually affected their driving.

"They think they're driving fine, yet they're all over the road."

At least one of this weekend's impaired drivers was a Blue Jays fan. Schmidt said they charged one driver dressed in full Jays gear after the baseball game on Friday.

Schmidt emphasized the importance of having designated drivers if you're hosting a Jays viewing party.
