Jarvis bike lane decision delayed

The contentious decision over whether or not the city will remove bike lanes on Jarvis Street will wait another day.

The contentious decision over whether or not the city will remove bike lanes on Jarvis Street will wait another day.

Members of council debated the issue Tuesday night until almost 8 p.m., before voting to continue the discussion on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Installed last summer after a long debate, the city's public works committeevoted to have the lanes removed on June 23 of this year.

Those in favour of removing the lanes say they impede traffic flow on a key north-south corridor of the city.

On the other side of the debate are cycling advocates who say the lanes have tripled bike use on Jarvis.

The lanes cost $70,000 to install. City staffsay it will cost almost three times that amount to remove them.
