Family of airport worker killed on tarmac mourns 'humble spirit'

A humble spirit, a pillar of his church and soon to be a married man friends and family of Ian Henry Pervez gathered in a Brampton, Ont., home Sunday to remember the man killed on the job two nights ago at Pearson airport in Toronto.

Pervez was killed after the luggage cart he was driving rolled over and ejected him onto the tarmac. He was 24 years old andnewly engaged.

Pastor Peter Paul of the Cornerstone AsianChurch described Pervez as a "wonderful man" who happily took on the least pleasant jobs at the church.

"He always chose the lowest work, he always chose what people didn't like to clean floors and mops and garbage," he told CBC News outside the family home.

"Such a humble spirit."

Pervez's father was too overcome to speak at one point crossing the front yard, into the pastor's arms, where he wept quietly. He had dropped his son off at work the day he died.

His family said he planned to get married in Pakistan this February, and had been happily planning the big day.

"It's a big loss,"George Gulzar, his uncle, said.

"I have no words I can't tell you how great he was. He was very loving, very kind. You can't fill that gap."

The funeral is planned for Tuesday.

Peel police and the Federal Labour Program are investigating what led to the accident.
