Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto withtemperatures expected to hit 31 C Tuesday and Wednesday and they could possibly climb even higher.

Tuesday'sovernight low will drop to 21 C, the agency says, which will provide little relief from the heat.

Environment Canada said the "heat episode" will mainly affect Ontario's Golden Horseshoe area, which stretches from Niagara Falls to Oshawa.

The agency said it issues heat warnings when very high temperatures or humidity conditions could lead to a greater risk of heat illnesses, such as heatstroke or heat exhaustion.

That risk is greatest for:

  • older adults;
  • infants and young children;
  • people with chronic illnesses, such as breathing difficulties;
  • people who work or exercise in the heat;
  • homeless people;
  • those without access to air conditioning.

Environment Canada urgedToronto residents to drink plenty of liquid especially water before feeling thirsty, which will decrease therisk of dehydration.
