Heat alert for sizzling Toronto

Toronto has declared a heat alert as temperatures in the city are expected to reach into the 30s on Monday but with the humidity added in it will feel more like 40 C.

A smog alert was issued late last week and remains in effect.

The heat alert will stay in place until further notice. With temperatures expected to stay in the high 20s over the next few days, the alert could continue for another 24 to 48 hours.

Dr. David McKeown, Toronto's medical officer of health, issued the alert,advising people to take it easy and try to stay out of the sun.

A news release from the city says residents are "encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours, especially isolated adults and seniors who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illness, to make sure they are all right."

In order to reduce the risks of heat-related problems people are advised to drink water and natural fruit juices, stay in air conditioned places, stay out of the sun and reduce physical activity.
