Man charged with impaired driving after fatal Highway 400 crash

A man faces multiple charges including impaired driving after police say he rear-ended a vehicle Sunday on Highway 400, killing one of the occupants and leaving three others injured.

A man faces multiple charges including impaired driving after police say he rear-ended a vehicle Sunday on Highway 400, killing one of the occupants and leaving three others injured.

This collision happened on the southbound lanes of Highway 400 in Vaughan, close to Highway 407. Police say they were called to the scene at around 1:45 a.m.

In a news release, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said a lone male driver hit the rear of another vehicle carrying four people, who were all transported to a local hospital after sustaininginjuries.

Police say a 60-year-old woman was transported from the scene in serious condition, but later died in hospital. Police have identified her as Arti Vyas of Mississauga.At least one other victim was being treated for serious injuries, according to police.

The 25-year-old male driver faces multiple charges including impaired driving. He has been identified by police as Jonathan Ian Brown of Brampton. He is charged with:

  • Impaired driving causingdeath.
  • Three counts of impaired driving causingbodily harm.
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
  • Three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle cause bodily harm.
  • Failure to provide a blood alcoholsample.
  • Possession of a schedule two substance for the purpose of trafficking.
  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police say the accused is in custody and scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing Sunday in Newmarket.

OPP Sgt.KerrySchmidtsaid there was no apparent reason for the crash, as traffic would not have been heavy at the time. Police also found marijuana in the driver's vehicle, he added.

Police closed some of the lanes to traffic after the collision, but reopened them at around 7:30 a.m.
